Water spots

What is the chemical difference between mild water spots and etched water spots?

One is mineral left on the surface. The other is damage in the clear coat. Treating an etch like a wash spot is how hoods get scratched. This is for anyone who parked under a sprinkler in Honolulu sun.

Who this is for

Outdoor parkers hit by well-water sprinklers, condos with hard municipal water, and drivers who washed at noon and let drops bake.

Buyers looking at a “detailed” car that still has rings on the hood in angled light.

Short answer

A mild spot is a deposit: calcium, magnesium, and other minerals left when water evaporates. It sits on top of the clear coat or glass and can often be dissolved.

An etched spot is damage: acid or concentrated minerals have bitten into the clear. The ring is now a shallow crater. Chemistry will not fill it. Polish may level it if enough clear remains.

What is happening to the car

Tropical sun turns every droplet into a tiny evaporation dish. Concentration rises as the drop shrinks. Noon showers and sprinklers are worse than evening rain.

Bird droppings and vog add acidity. Combined with minerals, they etch faster than “just tap water” would.

Coatings reduce how tightly deposits bond. They do not make sprinkler water soft. A coated hood can still etch if drops bake for days.

Glass shows the same split: film you can clean versus pits you will always see at night.

What a detailer can do

Cool panel, test a mild remover first, neutralize, then decide. If the mark is gone, it was a deposit. If a ghost remains in raking light, it is an etch.

Etches that live only in the top of the clear can be polished. The shop should use a thickness gauge on thin Japanese paint before they start cutting.

Prevention after the fix: shade drying, filtered rinse if the shop has it, and getting the car off the sprinkler clock.

What is no longer detailing

Etch that has gone deep, or a hood with more crater than gloss, may need respray. Polishing thinner and thinner is how you burn through.

Do not let anyone grind deposits off with a dry towel. That is how you buy swirls and still keep the spots.
