Short answer
The soil is loaded with iron oxides and very fine silica. On carpet it behaves like a stain and an abrasive at the same time. Dry rubbing drives particles into the pile. Water alone spreads the dye.
A proper extraction can remove most of it. Some pale fabrics keep a ghost. That is chemistry, not a lazy technician.
What is happening to the car
Particle size. The dust is fine enough to hide under the nap and in seat-track grease.
Iron color. Oxide tints fibers the way rust stains a sink. Alkaline cleaners and time help; bleach-strength shortcuts wreck fabric and dyes.
Moisture lock. Packed dirt in carpet stays damp in island humidity and then smells. The stain and the mildew become one complaint.
Re-soiling. Mats go back on top of dirty carpet. The next drive pumps more dust into the cabin from the wells.
What a detailer can do
Sequence matters: dry soil removal, then chemistry, agitation, hot-water extraction, and a real dry. Steam alone can push oxide deeper.
Mats come out. Rails get vacuumed at full travel. Seatbacks and belts are checked because webbing drinks the same dust.
A shop that starts with a dripping shampoo brush on dry red carpet is about to make the shadow permanent.
What is no longer detailing
Dye that has sat for months in cheap cloth may never fully clear. Replacement inserts or professional dyeing is an upholstery job.
If the padding under the carpet is soaked and sour, extraction of the surface is not enough. That is a dry-out or replacement discussion.
